From the Alabama bayous to Washington’s glacial pools, the warmth of our most human experiences pairs otherwise disconnected jokers, teachers, lovers, and grievers. Milestones pass, sunbathing on beaches and jumping from cliffs into the water below, as we explore life’s vibrancy and brevity through a meandering series of riverside happenstance.
I remember a few years ago, sitting in the water in a new-to-me river bend in the oppressive heat of Southern California. From that single point in that busy intersection, I could see teenagers daring each other to jump off higher and higher rocks; kids learning how to swim; young lovers holding hands and whispering secrets as they tanned. This all felt familiar to me, as I'd grown up in rural Virginia and fondly remember the time I spent at "Riven Rock", making friends while searching under stones for crawfish.
But, there was something different about this place. I could hear Spanish and Russian being spoken. Rumors spread of a nude tanning area just a short walk away. The sandy landscape contrasted the lush greenery of my nostalgic dreams. And yet there was something similar here -- something comforting and welcoming.
This film is an attempt to portray what I ended up finding again and again as I later traveled across the US and back in search of any body of water people relaxed in.
